About Jackie Fermin, PT, DPT

Jackie grew up in the world of gymnastics and dance, and pursued her love of movement by training and performing with the Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company while completing her B.S. in Kinesiology.
While at school, she was able to complete a dance minor covering technique training in modern, jazz, and ballet, as well as specialized training in dance composition, dance history, and teaching methods in dance.
Jackie then moved to Colorado to pursue her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree at Regis University, during which she had the opportunity to work with the Colorado Ballet for her final clinical affiliation. During this experience, she developed skills to assess, treat, and care for professional dancers within the context of physical therapy treatment. Since then, she has enjoyed working with dancers at Blue Sky and has continued to study dance medicine through continuing education courses including those run by Dance Medicine Education Initiative.
Jackie enjoys working with dancers because she is able to relate to their passion for movement expression and loves to educate dancers about anatomy and physiology related to the sport of dance. She believes that dancers who are looking to prevent or recover from injury can benefit from physical therapy by building safe and sustainable techniques and skills for their careers ahead.
What to Expect:
Jackie’s unique experience as a dancer, a Pilates instructor and a physical therapist allow her to identify and treat impairments and injuries specific to dancers and performers. Jackie’s multifaceted approach includes assessment of impaired dance-related function, capacity, and technique from a biopsychosocial perspective. Treatment often includes manual therapy to restore normal controlled movement through the dancer’s range of movement, specific exercise prescription and progression based on technique analysis to correct faulty movement patterns that may be contributing to pain or poor performance, and education and guidance to build healthy habits to ensure longevity in a dancer’s career. Pilates equipment is often incorporated in treatment to progress towards dance rehab goals. Overall, Jackie’s primary goal is to ensure dancers of all ages gain understanding and autonomy of their rehab and their ongoing exercise maintenance plan in order to sustain healthy moving habits for life.
